On the east bank of the Hudson River, just north of Poughkeepsie, they bought property and
a home from Thomas McPherson. In 1908, the Brothers bought the Edward
Bech property to allow the Hermitage to broaden, increasing the dimensions of their property to a hundred and fifty acres (0.61 km2).
Founded in 1905, Marist was formed by the Marist Brothers, a Catholic
religious institute, to organize brothers for his or her vocations as educators.
In 1905, members of the order arrived in the Mid-Hudson Valley
to establish the first Marist house of studies in the United States.
Poughkeepsie Steel Plant was bought to briefly house the library whereas the unique Fontaine
Hall was razed and a new library constructed in its place.
The Artwork Gallery retains the industrial look of the previous steel plant with concrete floors and exposed 15-foot ceilings.
Christchurch Arts Centre, housed in the former Canterbury
School buildings, was much less lucky, with moderate damage to the good Corridor, the Clocktower,
and the Observatory. The Marist Faculty Library was initially housed on the highest floor of Greystone in 1928.
In 1945, reference, periodical and work areas took over the second ground
as nicely, and then in 1949, the library also claimed Greystone's lowest stage.
